Manchester is pretty much a mecca for local, national and international gay
visitors. The gay village of Manchester is set around Canal Street, or as it is
affectionately known locally, Anal Treat. The name came about when some
tricksters removed a couple of letter from the street’s sign, and it stuck.
The Canal Street area hit the big time as a gay dating
and clubbing area in the 1960’s when the area was a bit downtrodden and quiet.
It became known as Manchester’s red light district where it was also easy for
gay men to meet away from the prying and judgemental eyes of other drinkers.
These days, Canal Street is gleaming with bright light, glitter balls and tons of
bars. Whether you’re going for something wild and a bit mental, or something
that’s a bit more upmarket and civilised, Canal Street is not the only place to go
in Manchester for a tip top gay night out.
A Posh One
At Number 2 Canal Street, Velvet bar and hotel offers something a bit
spectacular. The interior is indulgent and sexy, and the bar staff are hot and
often topless. If you intent to eat, drink, and party during your date choose
Via Fossa, a vibrant and dynamic set up that welcomes every one and stays open
For something with a bit of New York cool that is based on bars in the East
village, head to Tribeca. This place gets hot and sweaty, serves strong and
delicious cocktails and attracts Manchester’s most trend conscious gay men. It’s
more about the food than the drinking in Eden but it’s still a great place to
bring your gay date if you want to show him the suave side of Manchester’s gay
A Bit of Rough
If you prefer things a bit more rough and ready, like a gay bar that still shows
the football and serves pints, or somewhere with a bit of camp, cheesy
entertainment, Canal Street is still the place to be. The Bird Cage has a
reputation for being a bit raucous and is top choice for cabaret performances in
Manchester’s gay village. Expect dancing, burlesque, Chippendales, and drag
Taurus is a bit unique in that it hosts art events and has ongoing exhibitions.
With a true gay heart though, exhibitions at Taurus regularly include paintings
and photographs of naked, muscled men.
Top of the Pops
It once used to be referred to as ‘the best kept secret in Manchester’ but as
Lammars won the best bar in Manchester award two years in a row, this sparkling
gay bar has been forced out of the closet. Expect draperies, glittery bars and
dark corners. There is no better place in Manchester to take your date.
