It is not unusual to see a camp and happy TY presenter bigging it up on youth Saturday night TV screen as the host of your favourite TV show. Gay guys make great presenters for a few reasons, they are funny, they are outrageous, and they are often just the wrong side of risky.
Gay, gay friendly, gay favourites, camp as Christmas, whatever. Here is a quick run through of the best presenters on British TV.
Brian Dowling – Everyone’s favourite Irish Big Brother winner has stepped into Davina’s shoes and taken over as the face of Saturday night TV. He’s sweet, he’s funny, he wears purple and he’s going to be on TV for the whole of 2011. Catch him on channel 5.
Evan Davis – Catch him in the foyer of the great board room in the sky that is known as Dragon’s Den. As he says himself, ‘I am a TV presenter who is gay rather than a gay TV presenter’. So you can forget the bells and whistles, but still, he deserves to be up there with the best.
Simon Amstell – He started his life out as a presenter for Nickelodeon UK, so obviously he was never quite straight. His humour wasn’t really loved by the wee kids but luckily he moved onto bigger and better things in the shape of Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
Dale Winton – A list of the best gay TV presenters would never be complete without a mention for Britain’s favourite daytime TV host. Dale never actually addressed his sexuality until writing about it in his biography but let’s face it, all the signs were there.
Matt Lucas – He’s larger than life and likes to dress up as a woman in his hit show Little Britain. Okay he’s more of a comedian than a TV presenter but his appearances on panel shows and his endless charity work surely earns Matt a place on the list.
Graham Norton – Can we ever get enough of this guy? There is something so hilarious about Norton that turns all of his shows into cult viewing. He has interviewed everyone from Snoop Dogg, to Bear Grylls, and Ewan McGregor on the epic Graham Norton Show.
Alan Carr – Who can resist those thick black glasses, filthy laugh, and downright dirty sense of humour? Camp is Alan Carr’s brand of entertainment and it certainly works in his favour, this little comic has gained himself a firm following of fans.
Julian Clary – He’s called himself The Joan Collins Fan Club, he owned a dog called Fanny the Wonder Dog. Could there be another TV presenter as gay as old Clary? We think not. He’s got a whole long list of camp TV shows under his belts and has been gracing our screens for decades. Long live Julian Clary.
Paul O Grady – Since he ditched the dresses, wigs and make up of his character Lily Savage, O Grady has made a name for himself as a top class presenter in his own right. His shows include The New Paul O Grady Show.
Gay TV presenters - always a good topic to chat about.
