Just when you thought Russia couldn’t get anymore backwards Prime Minister Dmitry Mevdev stuns the rest of Europe with some wonderful, new regulations, banning transgender people from driving. I’m eager to know what they think they can get away with next. No gays allowed out after dark, in order to reduce the nocturnal Sodomy issue that’s rife in the country? The Word ‘Transgender’ to be banned from being spoken and replaced with the phrase: “those who cannot be named”? It feels like this should be hilarious but unfortunately it’s no joke.
These shit new regulations ban people with ‘sex disorders’ from driving as the government claims that they are more likely to crash. I’m surprised Russia hasn’t gone the whole hog and added Women to that list.
The ban extends to anyone deemed to have a “gender identity disorder” – including “transsexualism” and “dual-role transvestism”.
Other “disorders of sexual preference” also merit a ban – including exhibitionism, sadomasochism and paedophilia – Considering their view on homosexuality don’t be surprised if gay men get added to this list.
Shockingly, the Professional Drivers Union backed the ban.
Union boss Alexander Kotov said: “We have too many deaths on the road, and I believe toughening medical requirements for applicants is fully justified.”
Great job Alexander! Because discriminating against people with medical problems makes far more sense than toughening up on motorists breaking traffic laws such as speeding through your vast road network.
Of course this all just stinks of Putin and his fear of minority groups he’s not fond of.
The Association of Russian Lawyers for Human Rights attacked the “discriminatory” law, and says it will fight for a review from the Russian Constitutional Court.
A statement said: “[The decree] demonstrates bias against certain individuals and groups of citizens, as well as significantly restricting the rights and freedoms of citizens as a whole.”
Jean Freedberg of Human Rights Campaign Global adds: “Restricting transgender people from obtaining drivers licenses is simply another example of the Russian government’s increased campaign of persecution and discrimination against its LGBT population.”
Of course it is. Common sense is all you need to see through this bizarre and deeply offensive new law. How long can Russia keep removing the rights of it's LGBT community before we start to take action. At the risk of sounding like an alarmist but doesn’t this reek ever so slightly of 1930’s Germany? Just sayin…
